St. Joseph's/Candler finds the best and brings it home, just for you
Our commitment to acquire the latest and best technologies means we have many revolutionary procedures and equipment that you won't find anywhere else in the region.
da Vinci Robotic Surgical System
St. Joseph’s/Candler was the first health system in the region to receive the da Vinci SI HD Surgical System more than 15 years ago. Now, we have da Vinci XI, the latest in robotic technology at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Candler Hospital and the SJ/C – Pooler Campus.
Monarch robotic bronchoscopy
A newer technology in diagnosing lung cancer, Monarch robotic bronchoscopy allows for earlier and more accurate diagnosis of small and hard-to-reach lung cancer nodules. The Monarch Platform is located in our Bronchoscopy Suite at Candler Hospital.
CyberKnife®
Don’t let the name fool you. There’s no cutting involved with CyberKnife®. This revolutionary technology provides pain-free radiation treatment to tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue and cells. CyberKnife® is located at the LCRP’s Savannah campus.
TrueBeam
TrueBeam delivers precise radiation beams that target cancer tumors while keeping exposure to healthy cells and tissue to a minimum. The Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion has two TrueBeam machines in Savannah, as well as one in Bluffton, SC, and one in Hilton Head, SC.
3D Mammography
3D, digital mammography is the gold standard in effectively finding cancer in the breasts. A 3D mammogram offers patients a more comprehensive exam and allows radiologist a thorough image of potentially overlapping tissue in the breast for better visualization of early cancers. We offer 3D mammography at all five of our imaging centers (Telfair Pavilion, Telfair Breast Imaging – Eisenhower, St. Joseph’s Hospital and our Pooler and Bluffton imaging centers).
Automated Breast Ultrasound System (ABUS)
One of the newest tools in breast cancer detection is ABUS 2.0, an FDA approved ultrasound machine for breast cancer screening in addition to mammography for women with dense breast tissue. ABUS is located within the Telfair Pavilion on the Candler Hospital campus.
Open MRI
Available at St. Joseph’s/Candler Imaging Center – Bluffton, the Oasis High-Field Open Magnetic Resonance Imaging System – better known as an open MRI – is a high-tech imaging tool that benefit both patients and physicians. It produces excellent imaging results, is less claustrophobic for patients and reduces the likelihood of having to reschedule if you are not compatible with that MRI system.
3T MRI
St. Joseph's/Candler is the only place in the region with the 3T MRI, the most advanced magnetic resonance system available. Not only is it quieter and can be less claustrophobic, but it can detect problems other MRI machines cannot.
PET scan
Positron emission tomography, also called PET scanning, is a simple and non-invasive diagnostic radiology produce that uses small amounts of radioactive material for early detection of cancer. At the LCRP, we offer PET scanning at both our Savannah and Bluffton campuses, having the only PET imaging machine in the Bluffton area.
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)
The Valve Clinic at the Heart Hospital at St. Joseph’s/Candler was the first facility in southeast Georgia to offer this minimally invasive, state-of-the-art procedure. TAVR treats aortic stenosis, or narrowing of the aortic valve opening that does not allow normal blood flow, in patients that are too sick or too high risk for open-heart surgery.
The Watchman
The placement of this minimally-invasive device helps prevent the formation of blood clots and drastically reduces the risk of stroke in patients who have Atrial Fibrillation and cannot safely take blood-thinners long term. The Heart Hospital at St. Joseph’s/Candler was the first in the region to offer The Watchman device.
St. Jude Amplatzer Septal Occluder
This new, minimally-invasive implant is used in patients to close a hole in their heart, one of two conditions called Atrial Septal Defect or Patent Foramen Ovale. The Heart Hospital was the first in the region to offer this implant.
Impella
Impella is a family of devices used for temporary ventricular support in people with depressed heart function, such as cardiac shock following a heart attack or to help stabilize a patient before or after open heart surgery. St. Joseph’s Hospital has four Impella devices that can be placed on either the right or left side of the heart.
And there is more.
Because time is the key to recovery in stroke patients, we developed Stroke NET-work, which allows the neurologists at St. Joseph's/Candler to diagnose and treat stroke patients from Effingham to Vidalia to Jesup from Savannah. Stroke NET-work is powered by REACH Call, a technology developed at the Medical College of Georgia.
Pulmonologists who use InReach can now reach farther into the lungs than ever before. At a time when lung cancer is the most prevalent cancer, our physicians are the only in the region who can use InReach to place a gold seed in lung tumors, ensuring radiation treatments accurately hit the tumor.
