Candler Clays raises record amount

The 15th Annual Candler Clays Charity Shoot and Auction shattered last year’s record and raised more than $161,000 for Advancements in Cancer Care in the Savannah region.
The event has raised more than $1 million since its inception, benefitting the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion at St. Joseph’s/Candler.
“It was inspiring to see the Savannah business community come out and support Candler Clays,” said Thomas Odom, chair of the 2017 Candler Clays Committee. “This money will help make Advancements in Cancer Care at the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion and improve patients’ lives.”
“All credit and thanks go to our excellent sponsors, participants and the incredible committee and the SJ/C Foundations staff for helping us cross the $1 million threshold,” he said.
Candler Clays is an annual two-day event combining a charity auction of items donated by local merchants and a clay shooting competition at the Forest City Gun Club. This year 300 shooters on 75 teams competed. J.E. Dunn Construction was the presenting sponsor. Shooters and guests came from all over the region, including Alabama, South Carolina, and Florida.
The previous high fundraising mark was $152,000 in 2016.
Each year the event honors a cancer survivor or memorializes someone who died of cancer. This year’s honoree was Sharon Weeks, who was a patient at the Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion. She was diagnosed with Stage IV ovarian cancer in 2012 and immediately began gathering information about the disease. While successfully going through treatment she realized the importance of advocating for your own health, especially when it comes to gynecologic cancer.
