Dr. Wynn provided excellent care in Savannah and the Low Country for more than 40 years. He moved to Savannah in 1974 and began his lifelong commitment to patients, family and community.

Among his many positions of leadership, Dr. Wynn served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Chief of Staff at Candler Hospital. He also worked to educate young trainees as a Clinical Professor of the Medical College of Georgia and Associate Clinical Professor of Mercer University School of Medicine. Dr. Wynn worked tirelessly to develop and advance the cardiovascular surgery program at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Dr. Wynn passed away in 2017.

About Physician Legends

The Physician Legends of St. Joseph’s/Candler Health System Award was created by the Physician Recognition Committee, which is comprised of past presidents of the SJ/C medical staff. Nominations are rare, and to meet the criteria for consideration, the nominee must be a physician who:

  • Helps define the quality of care for the hospital system
  • Demonstrates innovations that greatly enhance patient care or defines new frontiers
  • Provides exemplary patient care

A formal announcement and recognition is made at the corresponding quarterly staff meeting with the recipients and their families invited.

The physicians honored will have their portrait displayed at either St. Joseph’s Hospital or Candler Hospital. This award serves not only as an introduction to incoming physicians to their most esteemed predecessors, but also as a “Thank You” to the doctors who have defined medicine in this health system and this region.

Previous physicians honored with this award include Dr. Tom Freeman, Dr. Julian Quattlebaum Jr. and Dr. Jules Victor Jr.
