Research

The Office of Research provides infrastructure to aid physicians in conducting clinical drug and device research and provides support in the development of physician-initiated protocols.

St. Joseph's/Candler performs ongoing medical research in a majority of medical specialties and is recognized as a regional center of medical excellence. Through this research, the population we serve benefits from having access to the newest and most technologically advanced drugs and devices available without leaving the community.

Studies and research include:

  • CREST study - Carotid revascularization endarterectomy versus stenting trial to compare the safety and effectiveness of carotid artery stenting to endarterectomy. 50/50 randomization to either procedure.
  • WASSID trial - Study to determine the long-term benefits of aspirin versus coumadin in preventing a second stroke.
  • Parkinson's disease - A phase III, multi-center, randomized, double-blind, fixed-dose response safety comparing the efficacy and safety of Sumanirole versus a placebo in patients with early Parkinson's disease.
  • ASP-II (Ancrod in Stroke Program-II) - A study to determine whether Ancrod begun intravenously within six hours after stroke onset confers statistically significant benefit.
  • Participation in the Georgia Paul Coverdell Acute Stroke Registry and Stroke Outcomes Study.
